Web hosting is a service that allows you to make a website accessible via the internet using a web browser, much like how your accessing this web-page right now.

Typically web hosting includes file storage, e-mail accounts and database services. These are all software applications which are installed on the web hosting server and available for use with a web hosting package. This allows people to connect to your website pages and view your hosted website content.

Once your web hosting account is created on one of our secure servers, you can begin transferring files to the server using a FTP client. The server then stores these files and makes them available on demand to people who visit your website.

Commonly known as FTP, is a system by which you can send files from your computer to the web hosting server. There are many free & commercial FTP software clients to choose from. Once you find the one you want to use all that's left is to enter your hosting account credentials and start uploading your website.

The hosting server has web server software on it that allows people to access content via a web browser. Each time someone types in your website address, the web browser is directed to our web hosting servers. Our web server software see's this request, then fetches the appropriate content and sends it back to the viewers browser.

Here is an example of how web hosting works with a Content Management System (CMS). The server software will connect to your CMS to perform queries and retrieve the content. Once it receives the content from the database that is required to build a web-page, the CMS does its work building a customised page with the information and sends this page back to the viewer. This not only allows for a more frequently updated website, but less work for the website administrator as they can manage their website via their CMS backend system. This all relies on obtaining CMS software specifically configured and maintained for it to operate smoothly.

Whenever anyone wants to send you an e-mail, a series of events take place between their computer and your hosted e-mail account. These events start with the lookup of your domain name, and the connection of their mail server to ours. Once the connection has been established a file is sent containing all the information our systems need to be able to handle the e-mail and store it in your e-mail mailbox on the server until you download it. During this process your available file storage space is decreased for the duration of time that the e-mail is stored in your mailbox. Once the e-mail has been downloaded the space is then released allowing you to receive more e-mails. This process also consumes part of your monthly file transfer quota, if you were to receive 100 emails that were all 2MB each, then you would have used 200MB of your file transfer quota.
